Messi effect sees Miami tipped for MLS title

Inter Miami will head into the new campaign looking to return to the playoffs, having finished nine points outside the Eastern Conference’s postseason spots in the 2023 regular season.

Despite coming 14th out of 15 teams in the East, however, Miami are among the favourites for the 2024 championship, having been transformed by the recruitment of Messi – and fellow Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets – in July.

Bottom of their conference when the World Cup winner joined, Miami lost just one of their first eight MLS games following his signing, and looked on course to mount a late challenge for a playoff place until the forward was sidelined by injury.

Before making his MLS debut, moreover, Messi inspired Gerardo Martino’s men to victory in the 2023 Leagues Cup – the franchise’s first ever silverware – and helped the Floridians to reach the final of the US Open Cup.
