After drawing with New York City FC, again in Lionel Messi’s absence, Inter Miami turn their attentions from Major League Soccer to the continental game.
This midweek, Miami host Liga MX giants Monterrey in the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, as the Herons continue their pursuit of their first regional title.

Will Messi play against Monterrey?
As he recovers from a hamstring issue, Messi has sat out Miami’s last three games. Most recently, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was sidelined for Saturday’s 1-1 MLS stalemate with NYCFC, which left the Floridians one point behind Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati, having played a game more.
Speaking after this weekend’s match, head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino was cautious over Messi’s chances of returning against Monterrey.
“Leo and [fellow injury victim] Nico [Freire] are taking it day by day,” Martino told reporters. “Depending on what happens in the three or four days to come, we’ll make a decision on whether they can play or not.”
Monterrey’s undefeated Liga MX run at an end
Monterrey, meanwhile, travel to the US having relinquished top spot in the Liga MX. Fernando Ortiz’s men had been unbeaten in the Clausura 2024 regular season, but have now been leapfrogged by Club América after going down 2-0 to Chivas Guadalajara on Saturday.
Rayados are five-time CONCACAF champions, most recently in 2021.
