Thursday’s Best MLB Picks

(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

San Diego Padres (-120) at Washington Nationals (+100) | O/U 8.5 (-12o/+100)

It has been all Padres in this series as they try to go for the sweep. The bats have been excellent throughout the year, as they are second in batting average and ninth in on-base percentage (OBP). This entire lineup finds ways to contribute, even Ha-Seong Kim, who is only batting .223, leads the team in walks and is tied with Jurickson Profar in WAR.

The pitching is another story. It doesn’t help that Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove are on the injured list (IL), but the bullpen is 21st in ERA, so they will try and add arms during the trade deadline.

Dylan Cease was an arm San Diego added during the offseason. While it’s been shaky at times, he’s been on a phenomenal stretch. He’s coming into this start with back-to-back outings of at least six scoreless innings with double-digit strikeouts, each against respectable lineups in Cleveland and Atlanta.

It’s another down year for the Nationals as they sit with the third-worst record in the National League. Of all the major categories on offense and pitching, they are lingering in the bottom 10.

Then there’s Patrick Corbin. Since 2020, Corbin has lost the most games, allowing the most hits and earned runs.

The Padres have outscored the Nats 16-3 in the first two games. Considering this pitching matchup, they should cruise to the brooms.

Pick: Padres -1.5 (-115)

Baltimore Orioles (-265) at Miami Marlins (+215) | O/U 8.5 (-110/-110)

One of the biggest stories in baseball is the Yankees’ recent collapse, as they have one of the worst records in the last month. This should have not only allowed the Orioles to catch up in the American League East standings but surpassed and gained a big cushion. Unfortunately, that has not happened.

They have moved into first place, but only by 1.5 games, and are tied in the win column. Since June 21st, they are 11-15, so they must bolster this roster to compete in October.

The big thing they need is rotation depth because the back-end isn’t pulling its weight. The front-end is a different story, and that starts with Corbin Burnes, who was a great pickup in the offseason. He is third in ERA and was named the American League All-Star Game starter.

The Marlins are among the few teams in the National League with no shot at the playoffs, as they have the worst record in the National League. They are terrible throughout the roster, as they are in the bottom five in almost every major category.

Rookie Roddery Munoz went through early growing pains. While he hasn’t been light-outs recently, there have been improvements, especially with the movement of his fastball and cutter. He hasn’t allowed a home run in his last three starts after allowing multiple five of his first eight starts.

A couple were against good offenses like the Mets and Astros, but facing the best power-hitting team and a possible Cy Young candidate will be trouble.

Pick: Orioles -1.5 (-155)
